VISIT TO BALLAL DHIPI-FAR IN HISTORY BOOKS BUT VERY NEAR BEFORE MORTAL EYES

M., an old friend of mine, who has been in the news for the last few days, invited to meet him along with the members of my family, which I did on Monday last .And what a meeting it was after long 38 years! G, our common friend, was also present. Old memories came flooding in. We three talked and talked till it was time for M to attend to some official assignments.

Heard –(here heard means had read) about Ballal Dhibi long ago.It was also known to me that it is in our district. What I did not know was that it is not very far from Krishnagar, our district headquarter. G was also eager to pay a visit there.

It is situated at a village called Bamunpukur on the way from Krishnagar to Mayapur in Nadia. It is believed to have been named after Ballan Sen of the Sen Dynasty (12th century).Following excavation by the A.S.I. in the eighties of the last century,A large brick structure surrounded by walls came to light and . Stucco heads, terracotta human and animal figurines, copper utensils and other objects were found at the site.
